We are delighted to announce that our Spring production will be 84 Charing Cross Road by James Roose-Evans based on the book by Helene Hanff.
This is a heartwarming and moving story based on the remarkable Trans-Atlantic correspondence between New York screenwriter Helene Hanff and the staff at London antiquarian bookshop Marks & Co.
But this is no mere recital of letters as the relationships grow beyond the initial book orders to take in witty literary repartee, shared personal lives and a certain kind of love affair.
On a stage divided between Miss Hanff’s cluttered Manhattan apartment and the inviting mustiness of the Marks & Co bookshop, the audience will watch common passions and mutual care develop over twenty years through post war austerity to “Swinging London” into bonds that bridge the Atlantic.
Performances will be at 7:30 pm on Thursday 9, Friday 10 and Saturday 11 May at Haslemere Hall. Tickets are available now from the box office at www.haslemerehall.co.uk
